Turns out the split had been in motion for quite a while.

The Blue Mountain State and Reacher star filed for divorce on Dec. 1, 2025, nine months before the couple publicly revealed their separation, according to court records PEOPLE obtained.

Ritchson, 43, and Catherine, 37, were high school sweethearts and share three sons: Calem, 13, Edan, 12, and Amory, 10.

"After twenty years together, Cat and I have decided to end our marriage and continue alongside one another in a different way," the former couple said in a joint Instagram statement.

They added that their sons "will always be the center of our world" and said they intend to focus on friendship and co-parenting.

Interestingly, the family continued making public appearances long after the divorce filing. Catherine and the couple's three children joined Ritchson at the Motor City premiere in New York in July, although PEOPLE noted that Ritchson wasn't wearing his wedding ring.

Ritchson became a sports-culture favorite playing linebacker Thad Castle on Blue Mountain State before eventually landing the title role in Amazon's Reacher.

Just last year, Ritchson celebrated his 19th wedding anniversary by calling the marriage and family he built with Catherine "the greatest privilege and success of my life."

Now they're officially headed in separate directions.
