Earlier in the season, it looked like the Texas A&M Aggies had a great one-two punch in superstar guard Chennedy Carter and center Ciera Johnson. Now, there has been a new star who has emerged among the ranks to make this team more potent and dangerous as they get ready for the SEC Tournament.

That budding star is Aggies guard Kayla Wells. Instead of drawing Shaq and Kobe cliché comparisons, we can now go into the Big 3 category when talking about the Aggies' star trio. We can call them Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, or James Harden, Chris Paul, and Clint Capella.

Wells, a sophomore from Dallas, has been a pretty consistent player this season, but she recently exploded for a career-high 29 points in the Texas A&M's 79-62 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. Not only did this game raise the Aggies record to 20-6 overall and 9-4 in SEC play, but it also showcased what Wells could do if she gets in the zone.
After suffering a 28-point loss in College Station to the No. 5 Mississippi State Bulldogs, it wasn't clear how the team would respond. With Carter dropping her usual 20-plus points and Ciera Johnson taking care of business in the paint and on the boards, it had to be exciting for head coach Gary Blair to see Wells have such a break-out game. The Aggies could not have afforded to drop two games in a row.
Texas A&M is doing all it can to win the final three regular season games to earn the best seed possible. The Aggies are also trying to finish in the top-four in the league to earn a double-bye in the SEC Tournament. Winning out is obviously ideal.
Kayla Wells' scoring gives the Aggies another element to have to game plan for and will also take pressure off of Carter, who will likely draw double-teams and during postseason play. Instead of having a 1-2 punch, the Aggies now have a 1-2-3 combination to compete with the best teams in the conference.
