USF Men’s Basketball Head Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim Has Passed Away At 43 Years Old

University of South Florida head basketball coach, Amir Abdur-Rahim, has passed away after undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital. Unfortunately, after complications arose, he died during the operation.

Vice President for USF Athletics, Michael Kelly, released a tribute statement for Abdur-Rahim, who was just 43 years old.

"All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim. He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss."

Notably, Abdur-Rahim, won the 2024 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award, as he led the South Florida Bulls team to a 25-8 record, and their first regular season conference championship.

Under his leadership, USF reached their first-ever top 25 ranking, as they were ranked as high as No. 24 last season.

USF President, Rhea Law, also spoke about the coach's impact on the school.

"In a very short time, Coach Abdur-Rahim made an indelible impact on the University of South Florida. In his first season as our head coach, he brought an unmatched enthusiasm, achieved unprecedented success and helped generate unforgettable memories for Bulls Nation. Throughout my time working with Coach Abdur-Rahim, I was continually inspired by his leadership, and truly admired his sincere approach to connecting with our entire student body. His influence on our student-athletes, coaching staff and the university community will live on forever."

Notably, Abdur-Rahim also took over a 1-28 record Kennesaw St. team (2019-2020), and turned their program around, as they went on to have a 26-9 season in 2022-23. He helped them win their conference, and as a result they were able to play in the NCAA Tournament.

On the USF website, the school announced their condolences to Amir Abudr-Rahim's family, as he is survived by his wife, Arianne, and three children.
