"Playing Dead" On a Fake Punt is Still the Most Insane Idea Ever

Arkansas State lost 41-20 when they played at Miami (FL) back in 2014 and during the game they attempted what is likely the worst fake punt ever.

Okay. Let's break this down:

First, note the guy in the slot who, for whatever reason, decides to play dead on the play. He does it quite well, actually.

fake punt fall

I mean, he is fully committed to the acting job as he places his hands over his chest and then slowly falls onto his back. We'll come back to him in a minute.

Second, who was that pass meant to be to? I think it's to the guy standing near the line of scrimmage, but is horribly thrown.

I can't figure it out. There's no one anywhere near the ball here from either angle. It was either horribly under-thrown or overthrown, which makes sense considering it's a punter trying to throw the ball.

Finally, back to the guy playing dead. He realizes that this play has gone HORRIBLY wrong and so he needs to get up and try to make a tackle and... oh no.

fake punt block

Dude gets whacked by a blocker the moment he stands up. I think it's for the best if Arkansas State's special teams coordinator takes this play out of the playbook and starts over on the fake punt package.

This article was originally published on September 15, 2014, but watching this guy pretend to fall over dead will never get old.
