Seeing a college kid intoxicated is nothing new. Neither is watching someone mistakenly think something is different than what it is. It's usually kept under wraps and out of the limelight, but not when you are a defensive tackle for a Power-5 conference school.
Unfortunately for Iowa junior defensive tackle Brady Reiff, a night out in Iowa City resulted in arrest and a public intoxication charge after he thought a police car was an Uber.
Not exactly the easiest of mistakes.
According to the police report and Kat Russell of The Gazette, the 22-year-old Reiff is accused of approaching the police cruiser around 2 a.m. on Saturday and attempting to open multiple doors, including the passenger door, before asking the cops for a ride home.
Yes, he told police that he thought the patrol car was an Uber when the police asked him.
Reiff, who had a blood alcohol content of 0.204, according to the report, was booked in the Johnson County jail less than an hour later and released the following morning.
That's not the end of the story, however.
Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz suspended his football player for the season opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 1.
"I'm not pleased about what we learned about Brady Reiff this weekend," the University of Iowa coach told ESPN on Monday at Big Ten Media Days. "Had a chance to visit with him today. He's going to go through a couple steps, but ... he will be suspended for the first game, among some other activities."
Reiff, a Parkston, South Dakota native, registered 13 tackles with one sack and one interception in eight games in 2017.
It was absolutely a smart decision not to drive, but Reiff probably could have picked any car but that one to get a ride home.
