Robert Griffin III calls for Michigan to hire Hall of Fame alum

The University of Michigan finds itself without a head coach after the stunning arrest of Sherrone Moore. No one knows how the school will choose to move forward, but Robert Griffin III has called for them to hire a Hall of Fame member.

Speaking on "The Zach Gelb Show," the former NFL quarterback-turned-analyst said that the University of Michigan should hire Charles Woodson.

"I think they have to go outside the box," Griffin said. "I know that initially they will try to go pluck a coach from somewhere else and say, "We're Michigan, you should come coach us."

Griffin continued and said that he could see a situation where the school has an alum serving as the figurehead of the program while great coaches surround them. He said that the offensive and defensive coordinators could run those sides of the ball while the alum focused on recruiting new players.

As Griffin continued to explain, those experienced coaches with all of the accolades can step into important roles. He just believes that no one would better fill that role of recruiter.

"To me, right now, one of those alums has to be Charles Woodson," Griffin continued. "And listen, I'm a colleague of Charles at Fox Sports, and I would say Charles Woodson would be a great candidate because he's a great leader of men.

"If Charles Woodson, Heisman Trophy winner, comes and sits down in your living room and says, 'Your son should come to Michigan,' who is telling him no?"

Woodson is a legendary figure in Michigan history. The defensive back spent three seasons with the team (1995-1997), and he delivered on both sides of the ball.

He tallied 16 interceptions in 34 career games, scored five touchdowns on offense, returned one punt for a touchdown, and he earned seven awards during his final season in Ann Arbor. He also became the first true defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy.

Woodson headed to the NFL in 1998 as the fourth overall pick, and he became a legend of the sport while playing for the Raiders and the Packers.

The Michigan alum spent 11 years in Oakland and seven in Green Bay while piling up awards and statistics. This includes Defensive Rookie of the Year, nine Pro Bowl nods, three All-Pro awards, and one Defensive Player of the Year. He also won a Super Bowl with the Packers.

Once Woodson retired, he waited five years before adding another accomplishment to his resume. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 alongside Peyton Manning, Calvin Johnson, Alan Faneca, John Lynch, and Drew Pearson.
