Auburn Legend Abruptly Resigns From Coaching Staff

Carnell "Cadillac" Williams has announced that he's resigning as the running backs coach of the Auburn Tigers.

In a statement released on X, Williams wrote the following:

"After taking time to pray and reflect, I have made the decision to resign from my position with Auburn football to pursue other opportunities. I love Auburn, the players and AU family with all my heart, but this decision is what is best for me, my wife and sons. I am extremely grateful for the coaching opportunity given to me first by coach Malzahn and most recently by coach Freeze. These past five years on the Plains have been nothing short of incredible. Auburn is and always will be a special part of my life. War Eagle!"

Williams, 41, has been coaching since 2015. He started his career as a running backs coach with Henderson State before moving to West Georgia in 2016 as a graduate assistant. From there, he went to IMG Academy and the Birmingham Iron of the AAF as a running backs coach.

In 2019, Williams landed with the Auburn Tigers, the same school he played running back for from 2001-2004. While coaching there, Williams served as the running backs coach from 2019-2022 before taking over as interim head coach during the 2022 season after Bryan Harsin was fired on Halloween that year. He went 2-2 as the interim head coach but was retained by Hugh Freeze as an associate head coach/running backs coach.

Williams was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. While at Auburn, he rushed for 3,831 yards on 741 carries. He had 45 touchdowns, including ten or more in his final three seasons. He also racked up 45 receptions for 342 yards and a touchdown. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2005-2010 before finishing his career with the then-St. Louis Rams in 2011.

In the NFL, Williams had 1,055 carries for 4,038 yards, 21 rushing touchdowns, 148 receptions, 1,002 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns.

As per his statement, it appears Williams isn't done with coaching and will pursue other opportunities. Where will Cadillac land next? Will he be an offensive coordinator or something else? We'll have to wait and see.
