Kirby Smart Pleas Georgia’s Case to CFP Committee After Alabama Loss

Georgia lost their first game of the season against Alabama in the SEC Championship game, and head coach Kirby Smart still believes his Bulldogs should be included in the College Football Playoff.

Georgia was a 5-point favorite coming into the game and had won 29 games in a row. After the game Georgia head coach Kirby Smart made his case for why they should still be included in the College Football Playoff.

"If you're gonna tell me somebody is sitting in that committee room and doesn't think that Georgia is not one of the best four teams, I don't know if they're in the right profession," Smart told reporters after the game.

Georgia has been ranked in the top two of the country the whole season and is on the verge of being left out depending on how the committee votes tomorrow.

Georgia came out on their first possession with an 83-yard touchdown drive with running back Kendall Milton having a 17-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. Alabama would score 17 unanswered points to take a 17-7 lead. Georgia would get the deficit down to three multiple times, but couldn't get a stop on defense to try to take the lead. Georgia also had a key turnover in the second half that led to an Alabama field goal on a fumble by quarterback Carson Beck at their 11-yard line.

Georgia is on the verge of missing the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2020. They are the back-to-back national champions and are looking to three-peat for the first time since Minnesota did from 1934-1936. With Washington staying undefeated after defeating Oregon for the Pac-12 championship on Friday night, and Texas winning the Big 12 championship convincingly, Georgia might be left out.

Michigan is playing Iowa for the Big Ten Championship and is a heavy favorite, while Florida State plays Louisville and has to start a true freshman quarterback due to injuries.

If Michigan and Florida State win, there is a very real possibility the playoff committee has to choose between Florida State, Texas, and Georgia for the final playoff spot. Kirby Smart believes they should get in with their best wins coming against #9 Missouri and #10 Ole Miss. Texas' best win is against Oklahoma State and Florida State's best win will be against Louisville if they win tonight. The committee has a hard decision on their hands and I don't envy them.
