Former Ole Miss Star Facing Controversial CFL Lawsuit

Chad Kelly, the former draft pick of the Denver Broncos in the 2017 NFL Draft who's now a member of the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL, is facing a lawsuit in Canada.

The lawsuit comes from a former Argonauts strength-and-conditioning coach. She's suing based on claims of the Ontario Human Rights Code being violated and wrongful termination.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiff accuses Kelly of a "pattern of harassment." She alleges it started with "unwanted romantic advances and escalating into instances of threatening language," CBC reported.

Unnamed, the woman claims that the team didn't act when she informed them of Kelly's alleged behavior and added that assistant general manager John Murphy "opened a can of worms that didn't need to be opened."

The woman is requesting $80,000 from Kelly and an additional $85,714 from the team.

Following this lawsuit, the CFL itself is getting involved with its own investigation.

"We take the allegations against the Toronto Argonauts and Mr. Kelly very seriously. We have opened an investigation in accordance with the league's gender-based violence policy. Out of respect for this process and all the parties involved, we will not be able to provide further comment until our investigation has been completed," the CFL announced Wednesday.

While the team acknowledged the lawsuit, they didn't provide any specific comments.

During his time in the NFL with the Broncos, Kelly was arrested for trespassing, which ultimately led to his removal from the team.

After a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts, he went to the CFL, where he's currently the highest-paid player. He's in the midst of a three-year $1.865 million contract.

Kelly never attempted a regular season pass in the NFL.

Arriving to the Argonauts in 2022, he started 16 games in 2023, going 15-1, completing 68.5% of his passes for 4,123 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also added 40 carries for 248 yards and eight touchdowns. He was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player.
