The postseason destination is still very unknown, but Texas A&M sure took care of business on Saturday to earn its sixth win of the season with a 38-24 victory over Ole Miss at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.
The best part? The Aggies finally won the fourth quarter after being shut out in the past two weeks against Auburn and Mississippi State. They trailed the Rebels 21-14 in the third quarter, but outscored Ole Miss 17-3 in the final period, which was capped off with a 46-yard game-sealing touchdown run by star running back Trayveon Williams.
Texas A&M showed a glimpse of how good they can be moving forward with a good running game and a stout defense.
Fisher showed a lot of confidence in Kellen Mond by starting him this week over backup quarterback Nick Starkle after his poor performance against Mississippi State last week, too.
Although Mond still seems to have some issues with turning the ball over, his interception and costly fumble in the red zone on Saturday was offset by his 236 yards passing and three touchdowns. He really showed a lot of resilience playing so well after the back-to-back turnovers.
However, a big key to this victory was the running game. Aggies running back Trayveon Williams, who carried the ball 31 times for 228 yards and one touchdown, dominated this game and made everyone's day a lot easier.
Williams' play not only helped Mond on offense, but it also sparked the defense and limited the Rebels possessions in the second half. Fisher's philosophy of having a strong running game and a good defense to win games was on full display. Having great quarterback play is going to be icing on the cake that will make the Aggies even more of a threat in the SEC next season.
Texas A&M is now 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the SEC. The Aggies will face the 8-1 University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers next week, who sit atop the Conference USA West division. They have won seven games in a row and will be a formidable opponent for the Aggies, who hope to create some momentum heading into the final game of the season against LSU.
A bowl game and a winning season would be a great success for coach Fisher's first season.
