One set of rankings that didn't use preseason polls has a bizarre No. 1 team

These rankings are downright bizarre.

Mississippi State got an impressive 37-7 win over LSU on Saturday and now coach Orgeron for the Tigers is getting called out by Paul Finebaum for it. That won't exactly catapult them to the top spot in any polls. But it did put them at the top of one set of rankings. The S&P+ rankings —- which did not account for preseason projections —- has the Bulldogs at the top though.

The only other teams that make any sense on this ranking are the 2 through 4 spots. Wake Forest is not generally thought of as a good team despite being 3-0. Their wins came against Utah State, Boston College and Presbyterian, but apparently they're good enough to be in the top five of this list.

The Football Outsiders have the complete rankings and the rankings can even be broken down by each phase of the game. Most rankings have the likes of Oklahoma, Clemson and Alabama at the top of their rankings so this top five is quite the surprise.
