Claire Tracy, a sophomore at Rice and former high school standout from Wisconsin, died on December 7 at an off-campus apartment near the Houston campus. She was 19. Officials have not released a cause of death.

Tracy shared three TikToks the day before she passed away, including one referencing the viral trend. In a screenshot she posted, Tracy explained the prompt to a friend and asked for an "honest answer."

The reply she shared was lengthy and reflective, touching on themes of pressure, overthinking and emotional exhaustion that quickly drew attention online.

She also posted a short clip with the caption, "Accepting that the big lock in just isn't gonna happen this time," and another from a treadmill joking about being a "popular loner" as she spent another Friday night training alone.

Rice University said Tracy had "close friends and a bright spirit," and described her as both an exceptional student and a gifted athlete.

Before arriving at Rice in 2023, she led Brookfield Academy to multiple soccer championships, scoring 118 goals with 63 assists in her high school career. She also excelled in cross country and consistently earned academic honors.

Tracy's death has shaken the Rice community, with teammates and friends remembering her drive, talent and kindness. The university said it is offering support services to students as they process the loss.
