"My father was a Special Forces operator with two tours in Vietnam and 20 years of service," Woods wrote on Memorial Day, the holiday that honors military members who gave their lives in service of the United States.

"To all those like my father, we all say thank you for your sacrifices. Without them we wouldn't have the greatest country on Earth."

Earl Woods spent his time in the United States Army as a Green Beret. It was during one of his deployments to Thailand that he met a secretary named Kultida, née Punsawad. They fell in love and moved to New York, where they married.

They then moved to California and gave birth to young Tiger in 1975. According to People, the couple named him Tiger after Lt. Col. Nguyen Phong, who had the nickname.

Woods, 50, was involved in a rollover crash in Jupiter, Florida. His Land Rover hit a truck pulling a trailer and rolled over on a two-lane road. The Martin County Sheriff's Office said that Woods appeared lethargic after the crash. He took a breathalyzer but refused a urine sample.

Woods spent eight hours in jail as he faced misdemeanor charges of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He then secured his release and vowed to seek treatment while stepping away from golf.

The professional golfer left the country and spent six weeks in treatment. He returned home on May 13 and reunited with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump.

"Tiger took his trip seriously and is all about continuing his recovery and putting this chapter behind him," a source in Florida told People. ""He is in good spirits and also can't wait to put the legal issues to rest."
