Herman Boone, Legendary ‘Remember the Titans’ Coach, Dies at 84

When the name Herman Boone comes up, every football fan knows who you are talking about. Those around Alexandria, Virginia know him from his coaching days at T.C. Williams High School. Everyone else identifies him in the popular movie "Remember the Titans" and portrayed by actor Denzel Washington.

No matter where you know him from, Coach Boone is a legendary high school football coach. Unfortunately, he passed away Wednesday, according to the T.C. Williams H.S. Football Boosters. He was 84.

"It is with great sadness that we share the sad news of the passing of former Head Football Coach Herman Boone who lead the Titans to the State Championship in 1971. #RIP."

Coach Herman Boone's Death

It has been a tragic year for the former T.C. Williams football team. Linebacker Julius Campbell passed away in January. Then, Titans assistant coach Bill Yoast passed away in May. Now, head coach Herman Boone, which was also confirmed to WTOP by former T.C. Williams principal John Porter.

When Boone arrived to T.C. Williams to become the Titans' coach in 1971, the city and school system consolidated all of the high schools. He then took an integrated group of players and won the state championship, finishing with a perfect 13-0 record and as the national runner-up in his first year.

Boone remained at the school until he was fired 1979 after allegations of player abuse surfaced.

The 2000 Disney movie "Remember the Titans" starring Washington and Will Patton made over $136 million in the box office and is considered as one of the best football movies ever.
