Umpiring is a selfless job. Oftentimes, the pay is terrible and you have to withstand earfuls of negativity from parents in the stands. Despite this, some umpires are able to transform the job into an experience that kids never forget.
In Minnesota, Louis Williams is the perfect example of that. He's so beloved around town that softball players he umpires for even beg for him to call games. That's how impressionable he is. So what is it that makes him so special? His infectious personality is one reason, and his backflips are another.
Blue Lou: The Backflipping Umpire Everyone Loves
This is Louis Williams, who goes by Blue Lou. He's an engineer by day and spends his free time umpiring, he told KARE11. His passion? Putting smiles on the faces of young athletes.
The self-proclaimed "best umpire" might really live up to that name, too. When he's not making hilarious strike calls or hyping up the girls in between innings, he's backflipping until he simply can't. Simone Biles wishes she could pull these moves off.
"My philosophy is just to, whoever I'm around, to just have a positive impact on their life," Williams said in an interview.
Even the parents at these games agree Blue Lou is the real deal.
"Amazing young man! Watched him umpire during a tournament earlier this summer. He definitely made the games fun to watch. He was so accommodating and patient when the girls would ask him for an autograph or to do his famous back flips. You are making a difference!" one parent wrote on Facebook.
"My daughter had him for an ump too and it was the most fun softball game we've watched! He's awesome! Thank you Blue Lou!" another wrote.
