The right-handed pitcher landed on the IL after experiencing right shoulder discomfort. This lingering issue now means that he will not be eligible to return to the lineup until May 8 at the earliest. He now joins several other pitchers working their way back from injury, including Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees activated Ryan Weathers. The left-handed pitcher had recently gone on the paternity list after he and wife Thayer welcomed a baby boy.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Chivilli landed with the Yankees as part of an offseason trade involving TJ Rumfield. He has appeared in two games this season while allowing two hits and one run. He struck out three batters.
Chivilli had been playing in Triple-A since being traded from the Rockies to the Yankees, but New York promoted him on April 15. The team optioned Yerry De Los Santos back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
The Yankees promoted Chivilli after he threw 8.1 scoreless innings in Triple-A while striking out nine batters. He allowed two hits and two walks.
"We think there's more room there for his secondary to become really good pitches for him," manager Aaron Boone said after promoting Chivilli, per the New York Daily News.
"For him, it's about controlling the strike zone and command. If he can control counts, he's got some swing and miss with his secondary stuff. The fastball is big. He'll be in the mid-to-upper-90s with his fastball, but he needs his secondary."
The Yankees have dealt with injuries to multiple players and have shuffled the bullpen multiple times, but the team remains in control of the AL East. The Yankees are 18-10 heading into Monday's game against the Astros.
The other teams in the AL East are the 16-11 Rays, 13-15 Orioles, 12-15 Blue Jays, and 11-17 Red Sox. The last place Red Sox also fired manager Alex Cora and five other staff members over the weekend.
