The family wrote: "We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st."
On Monday, U.S. Department of State and the United States Embassy in Costa Rica confirmed the death of Miller Gardner (per ESPN).
According to Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Police, Gardner and his family were vacationing at a hotel in Manuel Antonio, a town on the Pacific coast of the country (per CNN).
That is, upon initial investigation, the cause of death was believed to be from asphyxia, because his body was found with vomit on it.
However, medical examiners on Tuesday revealed that the teen's airways were clear. As a result, this fatal illness may have just been caused by a reaction to something the teenager ate, indicating some sort of food poisoning.
The official diagnosis will be determined once the final toxicology results are in.
All in all, this heartbreaking news has resulted in many sharing their sympathies for Gardner, his wife Jessica, and other son Hunter.
