The moment occurred suddenly, which caught the broadcast team by surprise. The game stopped as trainers rushed to the Timber Rattlers dugout. They began tending to Peña before ultimately rushing him to the hospital. He had passed out and collapsed in the dugout.
Brewers President of baseball operations Matt Arnold told Sports Illustrated after the game in a text message that Peña was fine. Arnold added that this was a scary situation that the team would continue to monitor.
"Luis Peña lost consciousness in the dugout during the eighth inning of the April 22 Timber Rattlers game," Arnold said in an official statement from the Brewers on May 1.
"He was transported to a local emergency room and released the following day. All test results came back normal. He is scheduled to see a neurologist on (May 4) for further evaluation."
Prior to the collapse, Peña had hit a single and accounted for an RBI in five at-bat attempts. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers went on to win 9-3 after the game resumed.
According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Peña is the third-ranked prospect for the Brewers. He has played mostly at shortstop while hitting .372. He has delivered a home run and eight runs, and he has stolen six bases in eight attempts.
The prospect's first home run of the season featured him hitting 99 mph off the bat. The ball traveled 373 feet before crossing over the wall.
Once Peña crossed home plate, he celebrated in a manner befitting Wisconsin. He donned a gold-coated chain holding up a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pendant. He also put on a foam cheese hat.
Days later, the Timber Rattlers showed Peña an important piece of merchandise. The team handed him his first bobblehead, which 1,000 fans secured before a game against the Quad Cities River Bandits.
