According to TMZ, the former fighter was arrested on Sunday evening in Georgia on a misdemeanor public intoxication charge. The arrest occurred at approximately 6:38 p.m. ET. He was released after 10 p.m. ET that same evening. He then made his initial court appearance on Monday morning.
The fighter posted on his Instagram Stories on Monday afternoon and left a simple message. He wrote, "Love you all, Im (sic) working on myself."
Poirier spent his UFC career fighting in the lightweight division, and he achieved success while facing off with some major names. He went 30-10 in the octagon while battling Michael Chandler, Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Conor McGregor, and Justin Gaethje.
The man known as "Diamond" won 16 of his fights by knockouts. He added another seven wins by submission. He finished 13 of his fights in the first round.
Poirier won the lightweight belt with a UFC 236 win over Holloway, but he then lost the title to Khabib Nurmagomadev at UFC 242.
The veteran fighter fought for the title on two more occasions. He faced Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in December 2021, but he lost by submission. He then faced Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 in 2024. He lost by submission.
Poirier retired from the UFC after his final fight, UFC 318 in July 2025. He lost to Holloway by unanimous decision.
Shortly after retiring from the promotion, Poirier indicated that he would return in a different capacity. He posted a message on X, which said, "Looking forward to getting back on the ESPN desk going to start focusing on that now."
This message followed UFC 314 when he joined Chael Sonnen on the ESPN desk to temporarily serve as an analyst. The promotion has since moved to Paramount+ as part of a blockbuster deal, but Poirier has still provided his thoughts on storylines. This includes a recent appearance on CBS Sports' Deep Waters podcast.
