Things didn't get any better for the Worldwide Leader in Sports this month as they lost another 555,000 subscribers. According to Fox Sports' Clay Travis, The company has lost over one million subscribers in only two months, and they now have 88 million cable and satellite subscribers. A few years ago, ESPN had well over 100 million cable and satellite subscribers.

Several networks have experienced a decrease in subscribers due to streaming services, but ESPN has been hit extremely hard. ESPN also pays more than any other service for the rights to content.

ESPN pays $1.9 billion per year for Monday Night Football, $1.47 billion for the NBA, $700 million for MLB, $608 million for the College Football Playoffs and over half a billion for the rights to broadcast the SEC, ACC, Big 10, Pac 12 and Big 12.

The network has lost both a plethora of subscribers and on-air talent, and the combination of the two has led to ESPN having one of its worst years in company history. ESPN is still clearly the top choice for sports programming, but several consumers have already decided it's not worth it to pay the cost each month for what the company provides.
