Report: A "serious threat" has emerged to sign Chris Paul away from the Clippers

This could get interesting in a hurry.

The Los Angeles Clippers are in a perilous position as July 1 approaches. The team is built with a top-heavy structure that features stars in Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. Beyond that, the roster is not terribly enticing and, given that both Paul and Griffin can leave via unrestricted free agency, Doc Rivers and company are living dangerously.

With that as the backdrop, a "serious threat" has emerged in the Chris Paul sweepstakes and that team is the Houston Rockets.

While the fit with Chris Paul and James Harden may not be ideal on paper, Marc Stein of ESPN brings word that Harden is on board with the pursuit.

Both players need the ball in their hands frequently to operate at maximum capacity but, with that said, Paul and Harden are excellent shooters and players that deploy high basketball IQs on the floor. The Rockets would need to shed salary in order to make the space required to sign Paul but, with contracts like Ryan Anderson and Patrick Beverley, it is not a stretch to think that Houston could do that in short order.

Many teams will be calling about Chris Paul in the coming days but the legendary point guard wants to win big and he may not find a better situation than joining an already impressive roster in Houston.
