Johnson, 70, announced the news with a long video on X. He said that this is not officially a retirement; he will still have a role during March Madness in the future. He just believes that it is time for him to step away from the NBA show due to multiple factors.
"Total honesty here," Johnson said in his video. "I've always prided myself on my preparation, the hours I put in every day getting ready for the next show.
"I've always loved that part of my job, but I've always vowed that if it ever became more of a challenge than it is a joy, then I will know it's time to step away. And now after 37 seasons, it's time."
It’s time.

Johnson also said that he had bypass surgery 14 months ago and that he has dealt with lingering heart issues for the past two years.
He said that his doctor isn't pushing him to step away from the show for health reasons. Instead, he's realized that he wants to slow down and spend more time with his wife and grandchildren.
"Thanks for your love, your loyalty, and your support," Johnson said. "And on this day, your understanding."
Inside the NBA first began on TNT in 1989 with a different lineup. Johnson joined in 1990 and kicked off a historic tenure on the basketball show. He led the way while primarily focusing on recaps of the games.
However, the lineup changed in 1998 with Kenny Smith joining. Charles Barkley then joined in 2000 after his retirement. This trio worked with some guest analysts during the 2000s, a list that included Magic Johnson. However, Shaquille O'Neal joined in 2011 to become the official fourth host.
We will definitely miss Ernie Johnson on Inside the NBA.

This group has remained together ever since while delivering entertaining moments and analysis to viewers. Inside the NBA then moved to ESPN at the start of last season. The show is back again this year as Johnson closes out his tenure.
"Ernie Johnson has been and always will be the heart and soul of TNT Sports," the broadcaster said in a statement. "He's a legend in every sense — as a broadcaster and iconic host of Inside the NBA to being a world-class person who is beloved by all.
"With his decision to step back from Inside the NBA, we look forward to partnering with him on his next chapter at TNT Sports."
