According to a police report obtained by TMZ, officers in Sugar Land found Peterson asleep at the wheel of a black Mercedes SUV early Sunday morning.

The vehicle was still running, and witnesses told police the 40-year-old appeared to be passed out with his phone in his hand. TMZ also published photos that show a man slumped over in the driver's seat, reportedly taken moments before police arrived.

When officers woke Peterson, they said he showed clear signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests. During a search of the SUV, police found a gun.

Peterson allegedly told officers he had been coming from a card game and had "two to three vodka drinks" a few hours earlier.

A witness from that same poker game told TMZ that Peterson had been "drinking like a fish" and repeatedly went to his car to get more money to play.

Peterson was charged with driving while intoxicated and unlawful carrying of a weapon before being released Monday afternoon. It was his second DWI arrest this year.

The former NFL MVP has faced several off-field incidents since his playing days ended in 2021. His latest arrest adds to a growing list of legal troubles for one of football's all-time great running backs.
