The Ravens announced the news on Thursday evening and confirmed that the former Chargers defensive coordinator will head out east to become only the fourth head coach in franchise history. He will replace John Harbaugh, who coached the Ravens from 2008 until 2025 while winning one Lombardi Trophy.

Minter had interviews scheduled with both the Raiders and the Browns. These will not take place as he heads to a championship-winning organization and attempts to get it back into contention.

"Jesse is a strong leader who possesses a brilliant football mind and a spirit that will resonate with our players and fanbase alike," general manager Eric DeCosta said in a release from the team.

"Jesse comes from a football family, with success at every level of the sport, and we are confident that he is the right coach to lead the Ravens forward."

Minter has spent the last two seasons coaching defense for the Chargers. The team has ranked in the top half of the NFL in both points allowed and yards allowed. This unit ranked seventh against the pass in 2024 and fifth against the pass last season.

Minter also has extensive experience in Baltimore. He was a member of Harbaugh's staff from 2017 until the end of the 2020 season. He started as a defensive assistant before coaching defensive backs. He then spent three seasons in the college ranks with Vanderbilt (2021) and Michigan (2022-23) before returning to the NFL.

It was during this stint at Michigan that Minter won a National Championship with Jim Harbaugh, who ultimately became the head coach of the Chargers.

Now that Minter is set to take over as Ravens head coach, he will try to fix a unit that collapsed last season. According to Fox Sports, this unit ranked 24th in total defense, 30th in pass defense, 10th in run defense, and 18th in scoring defense.
