The NFL has issued a multi-game suspension to Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf for "initiating a physical confrontation with a fan."

Metcalf, who CBS Sports cameras caught throwing a punch at a Detroit Lions fans, will miss the next two games on the schedule without pay. These games take place against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Metcalf plans to appeal the suspension.

The incident occurred during the first half of Sunday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions. Metcalf approached a fan in a blue wig in the front row at Ford Field and grabbed him by the shirt. He then swung upward in the fan's direction with his right hand. The video did not definitively show if Metcalf made contact.

"Metcalf's actions violate league policy, which specifies that 'players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and ... if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable,'" the NFL said in a statement on Monday.

The situation grew murkier on Sunday evening and into Monday morning. The Detroit Free Press caught up with the fan, Ryan Kennedy, who said that he had upset the receiver by using his government name, DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf.

Former NFL receiver Chad Johnson told a different version of the incident on his "Nightcap" show. He said he heard directly from Metcalf that the fan had used a racial slur and called the receiver's mother a c—-.

Kennedy responded on Monday by issuing a statement through a lawyer. According to ESPN, he said that "at no point" did he use any racial slurs or hate speech of any kind.

"Ryan Kennedy categorically denies using the 'N-word,' the 'C-word,' or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur during the incident that occurred on Dec. 21, 2025 at Ford Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers-Detroit Lions game," the statement said. "These allegations are completely false."

The statement continued and said that Kennedy has "been subjected to harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence" after the reports began circulating online.

This is not the first incident involving Metcalf and Kennedy. Pelissero reported on Monday that Metcalf reported this fan to Seahawks security last season during a game in Detroit. Metcalf spent the first six seasons of his career in the Pacific Northwest.
