The team announced the news on Monday, Oct. 13, after falling 20-10 to the one-win Raiders. This is a game in which the Titans gave up five sacks and committed three turnovers.

"After extended conversations with our owner and general manager, we met with Brian Callahan this morning to tell him we are making a change at head coach," said President of Football Operations Chad Brinker in a statement. "These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character.

"We are grateful for Brian's investment in the Titans and Tennessee community during his tenure as head coach. We thank him and his family for being exemplary ambassadors of the Tennessee Titans.

"While we are committed to a patient and strategic plan to build a sustainable, winning football program, we have not demonstrated sufficient growth. Our players, fans, and community deserve a football team that achieves a standard we are not currently meeting, and we are committed to making the hard decisions necessary to reach and maintain that standard."

Callahan came to the Titans after spending five seasons as the offensive coordinator in Cincinnati. He faced a significant challenge last season when landing the job as head coach. He had to replace Mike Vrabel, who led the Titans to two division titles, three playoff appearances, and a trip to the AFC Championship.

The team went 3-14 in his first year as head coach while fielding multiple quarterbacks. The Titans then used the first overall pick this season on Cam Ward, who became the opening-day starter.

The Titans required far more changes than the quarterback position, which the record shows. The only win came against the Cardinals, who self-destructed with multiple miscues that turned into turnovers.

The Titans rank 31st in total offense after six games and 31st in scoring offense. The team ranks 25th in total defense and 26th in scoring defense.

These rankings led to strong comments from Ward after a loss to the Texans earlier this season, who said "If we keep it a buck right now, we ass. We're 0-4. At this point, we got nothing to lose. We've dropped a quarter of our f****** games, and we've yet to do anything."

Now that the Titans have fired Callahan, the team will move forward to a reunion. They will host the Patriots, the team that Vrabel now leads.
