Favre wasn't heavily recruited coming out of high school, but he received a scholarship from Southern Mississippi. Despite the team wanting him to play defensive back, Favre insisted he play quarterback. He started his freshman year as the seventh-string quarterback, but impressed enough to take over the starting role by the third week of the season.
Throughout his college career, Favre threw 52 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions.
NFL Career
Brett Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft as the 33rd-overall pick and signed a three-year rookie contract.
Falcons head coach Jerry Glanville was not fond of Favre, and thus he rarely saw the field in Atlanta, making just four career pass attempts for the team. In 1992 the Packers traded a first-round pick to acquire the rocket-armed quarterback, landing one of the greatest football players in National Football League history in the process.
Favre would spend 16 years in Green Bay and become one of the most decorated passers in franchise history. Favre made 11 Pro Bowls and was named a First-Team All-Pro three times. He was named the Associated Press' Most Valuable Player three times, from 1995-97, and became the first player in NFL history to win three consecutive MVP awards.
Across his esteemed career, Favre threw for 508 touchdowns and 336 career interceptions, which is an NFL record. He also holds the record for most consecutive games started, most times sacked and most fumbles.
When Favre retired in 2010 he was the NFL's all-time passing yards, passing touchdowns and quarterback wins leader, but has since been dethroned in all three by Drew Brees and Tom Brady.
After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre retired from football in 2008 and the team was moving forward with Aaron Rodgers as the starting quarterback. Favre, however, wasn't quite ready to walk away and began discussions with teams to make a comeback.
After talks broke down with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Favre ended up joining the New York Jets. He played the 2008 season in New York before joining the Minnesota Vikings on a two-year deal for the 2009 and 2010 campaigns before retiring again in 2010.
