Jeff George was a high school standout at Warren Central High School in Indiana, before taking his talents to Purdue. After a disappointing season with the Boilermakers in 1986, George transferred to another Big Ten school — the University of Illinois — after Purdue head coach Leon Burtnett resigned.
George played two college football seasons for the Fighting Illini . In his final year, he threw 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and won the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the country's best passer.
His performance at Illinois garnered attention from various NFL teams ahead of the 1990 NFL Draft. The Indianapolis Colts were extremely interested in George, and traded multiple draft picks and players in order to the Atlanta Falcons in order to select George with the No. 1 overall pick.
George spent four years with the Colts, throwing 41 touchdowns and 46 interceptions, leading the team to an abysmal 14-35 record during his tenure. He ironically joined the Atlanta Falcons in 1994, where he played until 1996. He made the playoffs with the Falcons in 1995, but lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round.
The next year, George started just three games and left the franchise to join the Oakland Raiders.
He was in Oakland for two seasons before departing for the Minnesota Vikings in the offseason, where he made his second and final playoff appearance in 1999. He beat the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round — throwing three TDs in the win — before losing to the future Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams in the NFC Divisional round.
In 2000, the former first-round pick latched on with the Washington Redskins but featured in just eight games across two seasons before the conclusion of his NFL career.
George held brief stints with various teams in a backup or third-string role, including the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos, but never saw the field again.
Throughout his 12-year career, George failed to make the Pro Bowl, but threw 154 touchdown passes.
