Cleveland is hiring Todd Monken to lead the franchise, ending a coaching search that featured plenty of twists and internal tension. One of the key subplots centered on defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who had been viewed as a strong finalist and remains highly valued by owner Jimmy Haslam.

Schwartz's defenses have been among the best in football since he arrived. The Browns finished first in yards allowed in 2023 and ranked fourth in 2025, establishing a clear identity on that side of the ball. Haslam has been vocal about wanting Schwartz to remain part of the organization, which made his future a central part of the hiring conversation.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Monken has full authority to build his own staff but has historically been open to retaining Schwartz as defensive coordinator. Schwartz is under contract through 2026, meaning the next step is less about leverage and more about alignment.

It will ultimately come down to whether Monken and Schwartz believe they can coexist under the same vision. If they do, Cleveland keeps continuity on defense while reshaping the offense. If not, Schwartz could pursue other opportunities, and Monken will bring in his own defensive voice.
