The Washington Commanders do not expect to move into their new stadium until 2030, but the team has provided the first look at this future site of NFL football.

According to renderings posted on Thursday, the new stadium will feature a unique design as it sits on the site of the old RFK Stadium. It will have a concave roof that is transparent so that the outside light can pour in while up to 70,000 fans remain protected from the elements.
Similarly, the pillared sides will be primarily transparent so that light pours out late at night when the Commanders play prime-time games.

The Commanders turned to a veteran design firm, HKS, while looking forward to the future. This global firm previously designed stadiums for the Dallas Cowboys (AT&T Stadium), Minnesota Vikings (US Bank Stadium), and Los Angeles Rams/Los Angeles Chargers (SoFi Stadium).
"These renderings give DC a lot to look forward to - a beautiful and unique waterfront stadium and the return of our Commanders; year-round events that are steps away from an entertainment district and public transportation; and, of course, jobs for DC residents and new opportunities for DC businesses," said Mayor Muriel Bowser.
"I'm grateful for the shared commitment from both the Commanders and HKS to designing an iconic stadium that honors the history of our city - and our skyline - while also being a true catalyst for future opportunity at the RFK campus."
The stadium will not be the only addition to this property alongside the Anacostia River. The Commanders will add "outdoor plazas, public spaces, and green areas" while emphasizing public recreation.
This nearly $4 billion venue will serve as the future home of the Washington Commanders, but not until 2030 if construction completes on time. For now, the team will return to Northwest Stadium in 2026 while trying to get back into playoff contention.
The Commanders dealt with numerous injuries last season, including multiple to starting quarterback Jayden Daniels. The team finished 5-12 and third in the NFC East. Head coach Dan Quinn will return next season, but the Commanders will have new assistants after firing offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.
