This play, which will live on forever in the City of Brotherly Love, happened on the biggest stage. The Eagles faced fourth-and-goal with 38 seconds left in the second quarter of Super Bowl 52. They could have kicked a field goal to take a six-point advantage over the Patriots into the locker room, but they did not choose this route.
The direct snap went to running back Clement, who rolled to his left and tossed the ball to Burton. The former University of Florida quarterback then threw a pass to a wide open Foles, who scored a crucial touchdown before halftime.
The Eagles went on to upset the Patriots 41-33 while securing the Lombardi Trophy. Foles, who started the year as Carson Wentz's backup, became a legend in the city to the point that a statue in front of Eagles' stadium shows him asking Pederson for this trick play.
"Everybody loves the Rocky movies, but they were fiction," said NFL Films co-director Angela Zender. "The amazing thing about 'The Philly Special' is that it's a real-life Rocky story.
"A group of five underdogs went up against the greatest dynasty in NFL history and pulled off an upset worthy of Hollywood. That underdog mentality is something that will resonate with people all over the country."
