The move took place on Tuesday as NFL teams tried to lock in deals before the start of the new league year (4 p.m. ET on March 11). The Patriots, in particular, focused on bolstering the passing attack by bringing in the 25-year-old. Doubs will now ditch the Green Bay yellow and green and move East.
The original report indicated that this deal is for four years and $80 million. However, Spotrac notes that this deal is actually four years and $68 million. It includes an average salary of $17 million. The noted contract tracking company did not yet have the guaranteed money.
A product of the University of Nevada, Doubs landed with the Packers as a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent four years with the NFC North team while catching passes from Jordan Love.
While Doubs played a solid role in the Packers offense, he never topped 725 receiving yards. He posted 2,424 total yards and 21 touchdowns while working alongside Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and then Matthew Golden. Doubs actually led the team last season with 724 yards as the entire receiving corps. dealt with injuries.
The Patriots have made five deals ahead of the new league year while trying to put pieces in place for a return to the Super Bowl.
The team signed offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year deal worth $42 million, fullback Reggie Gilliam to a three-year deal worth up to $12 million, defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones to a three-year deal worth nearly $40 million, and safety Kevin Byard to a one-year deal worth $9 million.
The moves may not be done just yet. The Patriots have long been tied to Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown, who expressed frustration with his role at times last season.
Signing Doubs could complicate these plans, but the team could still swing a deal after June 1 to help with the contract details. The Patriots would just need to convince the Eagles to part ways with the dynamic playmaker.
