The NFC North team has signed Campbell to a four-year contract extension worth $81 million. This deal includes $51.5 million guaranteed and ensures that he will be on the roster through the 2030 season.
The move erases any questions about the Lions' belief in Campbell. The team had previously declined the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, which would have paid him approximately $21.925 million in 2027.
They had to make this move after exercising the fifth-year option on running back Jahmyr Gibbs, which took his approximate 2027 salary to $14.29 million.
The team did not let it get to this point. They locked Campbell down with a long-term deal delivering an annual salary of $20.25 million. This ranks second in the NFL behind 49ers linebacker Fred Warner ($21 million).
A first round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Campbell joined the Lions after spending his college career at Iowa. He has steadily improved each season while becoming a key member of the defense.
Campbell has appeared in 51 games over three seasons while starting 46. He has tallied 8.5 sacks, 402 combined tackles, 13 quarterback hits, and four forced fumbles.
Last season, he led the Lions with 176 total tackles. Nine of these tackles were for a loss. He posted five of his 8.5 sacks and he registered four passes defensed.
Campbell earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl after this career-best season. He also earned First-Team All-Pro honors.
Now that he has a deal in place, he will continue to play a significant role on Detroit's defense while trying to help the team get back to the playoffs, back to the NFC championship, and to the Super Bowl for the first time under head coach Dan Campbell.
