Carson Wentz is back.
Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday afternoon. News of Wentz's signing was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
There's a legitimate possibility that Wentz could step into the starting lineup when the Rams return from the bye week, after quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered a thumb injury against the Dallas Cowboys, back in Week 8, that sidelined him for Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Wentz was released by the Washington Commanders back in February, and had since been a free agent.
In a bit of a twist of irony, in joining the Rams, Wentz returns to Los Angeles where he suffered a torn ACL in the latter stages of the 2017 season, in a game at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Following his injury, Nick Foles came on in relief of Wentz and guided the Eagles to a victory in Super Bowl LII over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Wentz only made one postseason start in his career, a 17-9 Philadelphia loss to the Seahawks in the 2020 NFC Wild Card round that saw him knocked from the game with a concussion.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the 2021 campaign, after Jalen Hurts ascended into the starting lineup that season. Wentz played one year for the Colts, before ultimately being traded to the Commanders.
A career 62.6 percent passer, ball security issues have dogged Wentz for much of his career. The seven-year veteran has thrown 151 touchdowns with 66 interceptions in 93 appearances for the Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Commanders.
The Rams return from the bye week on Nov. 19 against the NFC West division rival Seattle Seahawks. If Stafford is unable to play, Wentz could get the nod in his first game in a Rams uniform.
