According to a statement from the NFL, the two teams have each received $500,000 fines for unsportsmanlike behavior. This followed numerous training camp fights between the players.

"The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints have each been fined $500,000 for the actions that took place at the joint practice between the teams earlier this week," the statement said.

"The Competition Committee has made sportsmanship — including at joint practices — a point of emphasis over the past several years. All clubs were reminded by memo prior to training camp of their responsibility in preventing unsportsmanlike behavior at joint practices that has the potential to result in injury."

The tense session between the two teams featured multiple fights. One, in particular, featured undrafted rookie wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner, who will serve a six game suspension to start the season for a violation of the performance-enhancing substances policy.

He is the son of Hall of Fame wrestler Scott Steiner, which he showed with a takedown of Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson.

The head coaches of the respective teams — Brian Schottenheimer and Kellen Moore — discussed shutting down the practice after the multiple fights, but the teams ultimately worked through the issues.

"We're going to play on the edge and we're not going to take (expletive) from anybody," Schottenheimer said. "But at the same time, I don't think (the Saints) were the only ones stirring up the (expletive).

"I think we might've been stirring it up as well. It was a sloppy practice all and all and it's got to be better."

While the two teams worked through the issues by the end of the joint practice, they did not avoid consequences. They will still have to pay the massive fines.

The Saints are Cowboys were not preparing for a preseason game against each other. Instead, the Saints stopped in Oxnard for a joint practice before taking on the Rams in the second week of the preseason. The Cowboys will continue the preseason with a game against the Cardinals.
