McMilan, a former Ohio State standout, experienced the injury on punt coverage early in the first quarter. He was expected to start at middle linebacker after a stellar showing in training camp, where he was taking reps with the first team defense since day one.
Mike Hull, an undrafted linebacker entering his third season with Miami, is listed behind McMillan on the depth chart and has made one previous career start.
Lawrence Timmons, who is currently starting at outside linebacker, could possibly be moved to the middle position if necessary after playing on the interior for several seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Miami will face the Baltimore Ravens next Thursday in Week 2 of preseason play.
