According to multiple reports, the former NFL quarterback has withdrawn from Buffalo head coaching consideration just days after interviewing for the role in Florida. The 44-year-old, who has never coached at the college or pro level, was viewed as one of Buffalo's more unconventional and intriguing candidates.
Instead, Rivers is stepping away from the process.
The Bills are continuing their search for a replacement for Sean McDermott, with additional interviews lined up. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Denver Broncos pass game coordinator Davis Webb is scheduled to meet with the team, while Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski is also in the mix after withdrawing from Cleveland's coaching search and renegotiating his contract in Jacksonville.
Rivers' candidacy drew attention largely because of the unique path that brought him here. After retiring from the NFL following the 2020 season, he spent five years coaching high school football in Alabama. He then came out of retirement last month to start three games for the Indianapolis Colts, adding another unexpected chapter to his career.
Over 18 NFL seasons, Rivers built a reputation as one of the league's sharper offensive minds, along with strong relationships throughout the coaching and quarterback community. He also has a long-standing connection with Josh Allen, having mentored the Bills star and sharing the same agent.
Allen is reportedly involved in Buffalo's interview process alongside GM Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula.
