Sources told ESPN that Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot at the couple's home in Virginia on Sunday night. Police confirmed to the outlet that a person is being treated for serious injuries, but they will not confirm the identity.
A news flash from the Loudon County Sheriff's Office said that the couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, of Ashburn, was arrested. He faces charges of Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling.
Elijah is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Bieniemy was with the Chiefs in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier on Sunday as the team's training camp continued on the Missouri Western State Campus.
The Chiefs have said in a statement that they are aware of an incident involving Bieniemy's family. They did not have any further comment on the matter.
Bieniemy, 56, returned to the Chiefs this offseason to take over as the offensive coordinator once again. He previously held this role with the perennial Super Bowl contender between 2018-22. This team ranked first in yards in 2018, 2020, and 2022. They ranked top five in points in every season he held this role.
The veteran coordinator served as the offensive coordinator of the Commanders in 2023 before moving to UCLA to serve as offensive coordinator in 2024. He returned to the NFL ranks in 2025 as he coached running backs for the Bears.
Prior to joining the Chiefs, Bieniemy spent several years coaching players in both the college and NFL ranks. He had two separate stints with Colorado (2001-02, 2011-12) while coaching running backs and then serving as offensive coordinator.
The Louisiana native also spent three seasons coaching running backs at UCLA before moving to the NFL and joining the Vikings.
This stint in Minnesota (2006-10) featured Bieniemy guiding a standout rushing attack. He first worked with Chester Taylor before guiding Adrian Peterson.
It was under Bieniemy that Taylor set the Vikings' franchise record with a 95-yard touchdown run against the Seahawks. One year later, Peterson set an NFL record by rushing for 296 yards against the Chargers.
This record-setting performance by Peterson came during a season in which he won Offensive Rookie of the Year after rushing for 1,341 yards. Peterson led the NFL with 1,760 rushing yards in 2008, and he led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns in 2009.
