"From the moment we selected Adrian in the 2007 NFL Draft, he proved to be a transformational player for the Minnesota Vikings," team co-owner Mark Wilf said in a statement, per the team website.
"His historic 2012 MVP season will be rightfully remembered by fans, but Adrian's consistent production over 10 seasons in Minnesota is what firmly established him as an all-time Viking and one of the greatest to ever play this game.
"It will be a privilege to welcome Adrian into the Vikings Ring of Honor this year, and we know it's a matter of time before we are also celebrating his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame."
The seventh overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, Peterson made an immediate and historic impact for the Vikings. He shared the backfield with veteran Chester Taylor early in his career, but he still won Rookie of the Year honors after rushing for more than 1,300 yards and leading the NFL with 95.8 yards per game.
Peterson also set the single-game NFL rushing record as a rookie when he ran for 296 yards against the Chargers. He scored three touchdowns as the Vikings won.
The former Oklahoma running back spent 15 seasons in the NFL, 10 with the Vikings. He led the league in rushing three times (2008, 2012, 2015), led the league in touchdowns twice (2009, 2011), and led the league in yards per game four times (2007, 2008, 2012, 2015).
Peterson is a member of the elite 2,000-yard rushing club, which helped him win MVP honors in 2012. He also earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors four times.
While Peterson's time in Minnesota ended after the 2016 season, he continued playing through 2021. He suited up for the Saints, Cardinals, Commanders, Lions, Titans, and Seahawks while adding another 1,000-yard season and 23 more touchdowns.
Peterson's 14,918 career rushing yards rank fifth-most in NFL history behind Emmitt Smith (18,355), Walter Payton (16,726), Frank Gore (16,000), and Barry Sanders (15,269).
