With Rey Mysterio's Injury, Who Could Replace Him at WrestleMania 35?

WWE announced that the high-flying Rey Mysterio suffered an ankle injury during his main event match on Raw against Baron Corbin. As a result, he did not take part in his scheduled match versus Andrade on WWE Smackdown Live last night. While reports are that he will be re-evaluated prior to WrestleMania 35 on Sunday night, there is a growing concern that the multi-time champion will not be available to face Samoa Joe for the United States Championship at The Show of Shows.

The Smackdown Live star stood up for Kurt Angle on WWE Raw after Corbin interrupted a farewell ceremony for the Hall of Famer. Naturally, Samoa Joe questioned the existence of Mysterio's injury at all, calling it "suspect" that he's "magically" sprained his ankle. The David versus Goliath, power versus speed billing makes for a great match, but if Mysterio's ankle is really injured, his explosion and acrobatic 619 finisher would be rendered useless.

With Rey Mysterio injured just days before WrestleMania begins in East Rutherford, New Jersey, who is still available to face the United State Champion if the cruiserweight is unable to go?

3. The Undertaker

It seems like a long shot, but rumors that The Deadman could return to the WWE ring at WrestleMania have swirled the past few weeks. WWE even put Undertaker's face on a production truck, increasing the thought that he may return. With an opening of this magnitude, it might be the perfect time for Taker to rise from the dead once again.

2. Bray Wyatt

Although he hasn't appeared on television since 2018, Wyatt is still under contract and was rumored to return to Raw after WrestleMania. If that's not enough increase speculation, PWInsider reported the former WWE Champion was spotted in New York City earlier this week ahead of WrestleMania. Wyatt versus Samoa Joe would be a powerhouse matchup that could spark another championship run for the "Eater of Worlds."

1. John Cena

A dream match between Samoa Joe and John Cena has been on the minds of the WWE Universe for a long time now. Cena hasn't competed since a triple threat match on the January 14 episode of Raw where he lost to Finn Balor and Drew McIntyre for a shot at the Universal Championship. He's been out since a kayfabe ankle injury prior to the Royal Rumble, so a surprise title match at WrestleMania would be incredible to see.

Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Cageside Seats) pointed out that Cena's potential appearance at the Showcase of the Immortals is being held close to the chest. If the 16-time world champion's theme song unexpectedly begins to play, and he faces the "Samoan Submission Machine" for the U.S. Title, pro wrestling fans at MetLife Stadium are going to absolutely explode.
