Hamlin, who won last weekend at Nashville Superspeedway, went out last in qualifying. He then posted the best time at 36.901 seconds. He beat Carson Hocevar, who secured a spot on the front row for his home race with a lap of 36.919 seconds.

This marks the 50th time in Hamlin's career that he has won the pole position for a Cup Series race and the second time this season. However, he will not lead the field to the green flag. He will drop to the rear of the field as the No. 11 team makes repairs to the car's rear diffuser.

If Hamlin wins the pole one more time in his career, he will tie Ryan Newman for the ninth-most in NASCAR history.

The rest of the top 10 included Tyler Reddick (36.929), Ty Gibbs (36.953), Chase Briscoe (36.956), Chase Elliott (36.958), Kyle Larson (36.967), Christopher Bell (37.003), William Byron (37.038), and Erik Jones (37.090).

Austin Hill, who will drive the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet for the rest of the season, will line up 28th. He completed a qualifying lap at 37.553 seconds.

Josh Berry, driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford, will have to start last in the field as he did not complete a qualifying lap. The Tennessee native slid up the track in Turn 4 before spinning out of control.

Berry slid down toward the apron of the track right by the entrance of pit road. He got the No. 21 straightened back out and then he continued driving. But at that point, the caution had flown, ending his qualifying lap.

The Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway will take place on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Prime Video will provide coverage with Adam Alexander, Steve Letarte, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the booth. Pit road will feature Marty Snider and Kim Coon providing updates.

Danielle Trotta will continue to host the pre- and post-race coverage, starting at 2 p.m. ET. She will have Corey LaJoie at the desk next to her, as well as 2017 Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr.
