Denny Hamlin Sets New Pre-Retirement Cup Series Goal

Denny Hamlin has a new goal before he hangs up his driving shoes. He's on a mission to add at least six more wins to his career total.

This would get him to 67 wins and put him solidly in ninth place on the all-time Cup Series wins list. And no, this number is not tied to America's youth constantly saying "six-seven."

"If you average the last 10 years or something like that, it's about 3.5 wins a year," Hamlin said Saturday afternoon. "That puts me right around that number.

"That's assuming that I don't wake up in 2027 and have a declining skill set. That's why it's still a goal. It's not the pie in the sky, but it's still going to take some work to do."

A few years back, Hamlin did not view 60 wins as his goal, let alone 67. He only had the goal of hitting 50 wins before retiring.

The goalposts moved as the veteran driver continued producing. He hit 50 career wins at Pocono Raceway in July 2023. He scored win No. 51 at Bristol Motor Speedway later that season.

The goal then changed to 60 career wins. Hamlin wanted to hit this number and tie Kevin Harvick for 10th on the all-time wins list. But yet again, he hit that number much faster than he may have initially expected.

Hamlin scored three wins in 2024, taking him to 54. He then led the Cup Series with six wins in 2025. He scored win No. 60 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and punched his ticket to the Championship 4.

Hamlin returned to Las Vegas Motor Speedway last weekend and scored his second consecutive win. This put him at 61 in his career and moved him much closer to former teammate Kyle Busch (63 wins).

The veteran driver believes he can match and pass Busch before retiring, but he doesn't think he will ever chase down the driver sitting eighth on the all-time wins list. The late Dale Earnhardt holds this spot with 76 trips to victory lane.

According to Hamlin, 76 wins is "pie in the sky." He doesn't see a scenario where he will hit this number before the end of his final contract in 2027. At this point, he remains focused on other goals.

"I mean, each win stacks up and, you know, 50 was a goal at one point," Hamlin said. "So, you just keep moving, keep moving the bar as far as you can. I think that I've certainly got more wins than what I would have imagined.

"It's just now can we get the big prizes at the end of the year? That's the only goal left to have other than the Brickyard (400) is certainly one that still is mindful of me personally, of where I'm at."

Darlington Raceway is a track where Hamlin will certainly be in contention to potentially move closer to his new goal. He has five Cup Series wins at the historic track, including last season's spring race.
