NASCAR Owner Richard Childress is Donating Ammo -- and Lots of It -- to the Ukrainian War Effort

Richard Childress has been in the NASCAR business since the late '60s, but there's another business that the 76-year-old Winston-Salem, North Carolina native is passionate about: guns and ammo.

Childress, who used to be a prominent board member of the National Rifle Association, is currently a member of Ammo Inc.'s Board of Directors.

In an attempt to leverage that position for a good cause, Childress recently offered to donate one million rounds of ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to help in the ongoing war with Russia.

"I was listening the other day to (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy say he didn't want out, he wanted ammunition," Childress told Fox News on Wednesday. "I called my good friend Fred Wagenhals, who is the Chairman of AMMO, Inc., and I said, 'Fred, we have to help these people. They need ammunition.' He stepped right up."

Childress, who said that he will be working with a private company to ensure the ammo gets to Ukraine as quickly as possible, added that the current situation in Ukraine is a "wakeup call for Americans on why we have to have our second amendment."

"To see the people in Ukraine fighting, it's terrible to see the lives that are being lost over there," he added. "We have to do all we can, and I felt with Ammo Inc. and myself, we were doing the right thing."

Childress, who has owned Richard Childress Racing since 1969, is a member of the 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame class. His alliance with Dale Earnhardt in the late '80s and early '90s earned him six championships as a NASCAR team owner.

For Childress, NASCAR is a family business. His son-in-law is RCR general manager Mike Dillon, while his grandsons — Ty and Austin Dillon — currently compete in the Cup Series.
