"I can understand that it's a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it, or at least try to explain it," Klopp said. "It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again."
Klopp is responsible for one of the greatest runs in Liverpool's storied history. The Reds have won virtually every possible trophy under Klopp's leadership, including a Champions League title in 2018-19, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, the English Super Cup, and most notably a Premier League title during the 2019-20 season that ended Liverpool's 30-year drought.
After a down year last season, Klopp is hoping to end his managerial career on a high note. Liverpool are currently holding the top spot in the Premier League, holding a five-point lead over Manchester City with an extra game played. Meanwhile, the Reds are entering the knockout stage of the Europa League while still staying in the FA Cup. Klopp's side will also be facing Chelsea in the EFL Cup final on February 25 at Wembley Stadium.
Prior to taking over at Liverpool in 2015, Klopp was the manager of Borussia Dortmund from 2008 to 2015, and Mainz 05 from 2001 to 2008.
It's unclear who Liverpool will replace Klopp with after this season, but rumors are already surfacing that former player Xabi Alonso could replace the iconic manager. Alonso is currently leading the top club in the Bundesliga in Bayer Leverkusen, but there are rumors that he has a secret release clause that would allow him to coach at either Liverpool or Real Madrid.
Despite the rumors, Liverpool fans are more focused on making sure that Klopp can end his managerial career with a few more trophies before the end of the season.
