Muniz, who missed the Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, captured his championship at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He and co-driver Tyler Stone won the GT4 America AM Class title while driving the No. 30 Ford Mustang for TechSport Racing.
The two drivers entered the final race weekend of the season leading the Am Class by a narrow margin. They couldn't afford to make any mistakes at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Muniz and Stone went out and did what they needed. They finished second in the first race of the weekend. This helped them maintain the points lead. They then delivered another podium finish on Sunday to clinch their title.
This championship caps off what has been a career season for Muniz. He scored his first professional racing victory earlier this year at Road America, and then he and Stone added multiple other wins.
Muniz actually closed out the championship on Sunday. Stone controlled the No. 30 TechSport Racing Ford during the first run of the race, and he had the car inside the top 10.
Once Muniz took over the car for the final stretch of the race, he began to take advantage of battles further up in the field. He went from fourth place to second place, which put TechSport Racing into the championship lead for good.
"My first time ever in a GT4 car was the first practice session at Sonoma," Muniz said after the race. "I thank Ford Racing for pointing me in this direction. Halfway through the year, we really figured everything out — won a few races and put ourselves in the position to win the championship.
"We had a great race yesterday, finishing second and having the points lead. We had a bad break for today, starting 10th in class. I didn't know what was going to happen, but now we are the champs.
"This was a work in progress for 20 years... it took me 20 years to experience the feeling of winning and being champions. Thank you to Tyler, TechSport and Ford Racing."
