It takes incredible skill, focus and athleticism to play shortstop in the SEC. Balls are rocketed in the hole and up the middle, which force Derek Jeter-like plays at times.

A good infielder who can cover ground can rob numerous hits throughout a game. That's why a flashy shortstop is often a pitcher's best friend. It takes some serious poise and a bazooka-like arm, though.
When LSU pitcher Carley Hoover gave up what looked to be a bloop infield single, shortstop Amber Serrett came to the rescue with a dynamite barehanded play. Check out the cannon, too.

Hoover was throwing a gem in Baton Rouge's Tiger Park that night in 2017 against Florida Atlantic University. She finished with a complete game, allowing just one run and struck out 12 batters.
With a runner on third and two outs in the fifth inning, Serrett helped keep her game scoreless in an impressive way.
FAU's Tatum Buckley looped a ball over Hoover's head in no man's land. The ball took an odd bounce and forced Serrett to grab it barehanded on the run. The defensive wizard then fired a strike to first base for the out. I hope someone checked on the first baseman's hand after that fastball.
LSU softball went on to win the game, 5-1.
Serrett, who was a sophomore at the time, earned recognition from the NCAA. Her barehanded grab earned the No. 3 spot in the organization's weekly top 10 plays.
The Spring, Texas native went on to have a productive four-year career in Louisiana. She played a major role on both LSU's 2016 and 2017 Women's College World Series runs. She also collected 176 hits, 122 runs, 19 home runs and many more defensive web gems than just this one.
