After the Miami Dolphins informed Hill he would be released, attention immediately swung back to the Kansas City Chiefs, the franchise where Hill became a superstar. According to ESPN, Kansas City plans to keep tabs on him throughout the offseason. That is interest, not intent.

The biggest issue is health. Hill is coming off a brutal knee injury suffered last September against the Jets. The damage included a dislocated knee and multiple torn ligaments, including an ACL. He has already undergone surgery and could require another before the rehab process is complete.

That reality matters. Any team considering Hill has to accept that he may not play at all in 2026. The Chiefs, in particular, would need extensive medical clarity before even thinking about bringing him back into the building.

Then there is the money.

Kansas City is still more than $11 million over the cap, even after Patrick Mahomes restructured his deal. Mahomes is also rehabbing his own ACL tear, suffered in December during a season that spiraled to a 6-11 finish.

Hill's history in Kansas City is obvious. Six seasons. One Super Bowl. Game changing speed that warped defenses weekly. But this is not nostalgia season for the Chiefs.

Andy Reid and the front office can admire the past while still respecting the present. Hill is available. Kansas City is watching. That does not mean they are ready to jump.

Sometimes circling the idea is the whole plan.
