According to an announcement, New York Jets owner and chairman Robert Wood Johnson has acquired a minority stake in Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team. He will immediately join the board of directors while serving as vice chairman.

This marks another unique crossover between the two sports. Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton is also a minority owner of the Denver Broncos.

Executive Chairman and Controlling Shareholder Lawrence Stroll will continue to manage the day-to-day operations of Aston Martin's F1 team.

Johnson, who also has a 43% stake in English football club Crystal Palace, will focus more on the F1 team's commercial growth. Johnson will particularly focus on the United States, an area where the open-wheel racing series continues to gain a significant foothold.

"During my time as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, I have developed a deep appreciation for Aston Martin's rich history, as well as Lawrence Stroll's strategic vision and entrepreneurial spirit.

"I am excited to partner with him and contribute to the continued development of the Team, with the ambition of building an organisation capable of competing at the very highest level of the sport.

"We also share a commitment to growing the fanbase in the United States and introducing even more fans to the excitement of Formula One."

Aston Martin currently competes full-time in F1 with two entries. Fernando Alonso drives the No. 14 while Lance Stroll drives the No. 16.

The strategic change happens as both sports franchises prepare for big weekends. The F1 teams are at Circuit Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix weekend. This race will take place on Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. ET. Apple TV will provide coverage for viewers in the United States.

The New York Jets kick off the weekend with the second preseason game. Johnson's team will play the Pittsburgh Steelers at 7 p.m. ET.
