The racing world is in mourning after the passing of Bowman Gray Stadium icon Gary Myers, who passed away at 76.

According to Fox 8, Myers passed away on Thursday, Sept. 10, after a period of declining health. He is survived by wife Pam, sons Burt and Jason, grandson Slate, and others.
"Last night I lost my hero," Burt posted on Facebook. "He fought so hard but was so tired. My daddy is in Heaven and can finally do the things he wanted to do the last several years.
"Thank God for the times we had. He taught me everything I know. Selfishly I want him here but I know he is much better off now. I miss him so much. I love you Daddy!"
A native of North Carolina, Myers became a fixture at Bowman Gray Stadium for 60 years. He watched his father and uncle race at the short track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and then he began competing. Once his racing career ended, he helped his sons Burt and Jason become wildly successful on the circuit.
Myers won 38 races at Bowman Gray Stadium during his career. He also became the 1996 SMART Modified Tour champion.

"We lost one of our heroes - Gary Myers," the SMART Modified Tour said on social media. "Gary was a Founding Member of the SMART Modified Tour & its 1996 champion. He had 15 wins.
"Gary's sons, Burt & Jason, as well as grandson, Slate, are winning racecar drivers as well. Our thoughts & prayers go out to the entire Myers family."
Along with competing at Bowman Gray Stadium, Myers also raced in the NASCAR Cup Series during the 1970s. He started 46 races between 1974-78, and he posted 18 top-20 finishes.
The short track experience showed as he finished 11th at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 1977, 11th at Martinsville Speedway in 1976, and 11th at Rockingham Speedway in 1977. He also finished 12th at the Nashville Fairgrounds in 1977.
