Weather forces premature cancellation of NHRA season

The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season has come to an early end due to heavy rainfall in Southern California, which officials said created unsafe racing conditions.

NHRA officials decided on Sunday afternoon to cancel the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. The persistent rainfall made it impossible for the high-powered dragsters and motorcycles to hit the track and compete in the final race weekend of the season.

This decision forced NHRA officials to determine the season champions for the majority of series. Austin Prock won the Funny Car title, Dallas Glenn won the Pro Stock title, and Richard Gadson won the Pro Stock Motorcycle title. Shawn Cowie won the Top Alcohol Dragster title.

The only championship not determined by points was Top Fuel. Veteran driver Doug Kalitta entered the weekend with the points lead in the division, and he remained there after rain washed out Saturday's qualifying sessions.

The NHRA eliminations were set to begin at 10 a.m. local time on Sunday. However, rain delayed the events. Once the rain stopped, track crews began drying and scraping the track in an attempt to get back racing.

They never had the opportunity. The rain began falling once again at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. This further disrupted the schedule and forced the officials to make the difficult decision to cancel the rest of the season.

"While we explored every possible option to complete the event this weekend, the safety of our competitors, teams and fans remains the highest priority, which led to this difficult decision to cancel the event," NHRA President Glen Cromwell said in a statement.

"We thank the incredible NHRA community - and especially the fans for braving the elements - for their unwavering support throughout this challenging weekend and during an unforgettable 2025 season."
